Modern businesses are heavily telephone based. Computer telephony is also known as computer telephony integration (CTI). Simply put, computer telephony is the use of computers for managing calls.

Features of Commuter Telephony
The whole telephone network of a company is controlled by the computer. CTI allows the information to pass between the telephone system and the data network. CTI links up the computers and telephones to process all your voice, data, and fax traffic.

If your business receives a substantial volume of calls, either outbound or inbound, computer telephony is definitely useful. This technology finds great use in the call center.

One of the basic features of computer telephony is screen popping, the ability to identify the customer based on their number. As soon as the call comes to an agent, the computer pulls up all of the information about the call from the company database and displays it on the agent’s screen. In other words, before the call is answered, the agent knows all of the details about the caller. This allows your business to provide a more personalized assistance to your customer.

Some Advantages
Computer telephony saves time and money by increasing speed and accuracy of call processing. Computer telephony can be integrated with applications like interactive voice response (IVR), intelligent routing, and agent workflow automation. The telephone system is connected with agent workstations and the caller is immediately identified.

It saves an average of 15 to 30 seconds per call, thus increasing the number of calls your agents can handle. It improves the value and functionality that an organization can derive from its telephone system because the integration with the computer system allows for greater control and intelligence.

The call, both inbound and outbound can be logged and recorded. This allows you to monitor the effectiveness of operating system and your employees.

The following tips would be helpful for those trying to provide the CTI solution for their business:

• Simple CTI solution can be run on your PC or a small network of PCs. There is no need to invest in special equipment.
• Your computer would be installed with a soft telephone program, which allows your computer to make and receive calls. You would need a microphone and a headset to connect to your computer.
• You can also configure voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) on your PC. This allows the computer to place and receive call via the Internet. You do not pay any call charges. The only drawback of this technology is that sudden reduction in bandwidth or loss of Internet connection can bring down the telephone lines.
• For large enterprises, a server-based or telephone hub is a better option. A server or hub is like a computer that helps distribute calls to various computers or telephones.
• This allows you to queue and distribute e-mails and Web-based communications
• Inbound and outbound calls can be handled by the same system. Staff can easily switch from inbound to outbound calls and vice versa.

If your business does not have a large customer base, or you do not handle too many inbound or outbound calls, CTI is not an option for you. Computer telephony is best suited for businesses dealing with heavy telephone traffic. Most of the CTI systems work with standard phones. If you are going for a computer telephony solution, make sure it is flexible enough to grow with the future demands of your business. Establish the cost of implementing the computer telephony system.

We have come a long way with technology. This is evident especially in the communications aspect of our daily lives. From the telephone to the Internet, IP telephone systems are fast becoming the most popular form of voice communication.

One such system is the VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol. It is a technology that allows users to make phone calls through the Internet. Voice data is sent through a packet-switched network instead of the circuit switch transmission. The voip systems send signals to set up or terminate calls and then make it possible for people to talk and hear each other online.

VOIP systems are being used by an increasing number of organizations. This is because by using such systems they can utilize their networks more efficiently. Especially for those who transfer a large amount of audio and video data over the Internet, VOIP systems definitely suit their communication needs.

This new system for transmitting calls has been around since 1995. Now that the quality of service is better and the market for using IP telephone systems are increasing, the Internet will live long to serve us with endless possibilities. Although the price of the equipment for voip is still expensive, prices will soon be affordable with competition driving suppliers.

When setting up a VOIP system at work, there are certain requirements. First, you must have voip equipment. Basically, all you need for a VOIP system is a regular phone, broadband Internet service, an adapter and subscription to a VoIP service. For a VOIP system at the office, there is available specialized voip equipment that is user friendly and can take the hassle off of using the desktop format to make a call.

VOIP systems require equipment for termination. VOIP termination provides very reliable long distance connection for carriers using an IP network to terminate an IP-originated call to Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). What this does is it enables an enhanced service provider to offer long distance VoIP access to any residential and commercial customer.

VOIP termination works by transmitting IP-network calls to the plain old telephone service of the PSTN. By converting the voice data from a digitized telephony to analog and vice versa, both parties can hear each other more clearly. Long distance service greatly benefits from this because of the lower rates compared to the landline connections.

Equipment for termination not only requires establishing physical points of presence (POP) in several geographical areas and using them to transfer and terminate calls from VoIP to PSTN networks. It also needs the POP to be equipped with gateways that will receive VoIP calls in the form of data packets, convert them to analog signals and terminate calls locally to the PSTN network.

VOIP systems are fairly new in today’s industry, which is why many still doubt the technology. There are security concerns and those who are still unsatisfied with the quality of the voice transmission. But as technology keeps on improving, we may be surprised at what tomorrow will bring us.

The Voice over Internet Protocol has been emerging and is considered one of the most outstanding and prominent features of the ever-popular Internet.

VOIP is also commonly termed as computer telephony or IP phone system, but for consistency, VOIP will be used throughout this article.

VOIP works by facilitating or transmitting voice or audio messages through the vast and broad Internet network. The end user or the recipient of such audio messages will then receive the voice or audio transmissions in its original state.

Thus, although the transmission is facilitated online, the quality and efficiency of VOIP messages are generally similar, if not better, than that of the conventional or traditional voice messages transmitted through your regular landline.

Because of its attractive and efficient user interface, VOIP has been one of the most widely used and popular online services in the past few years.

VOIP billing and VOIP vendors

But because VOIP is powered by the Internet and there is an apparent rise on its popularity, it is no wonder that VOIP has also become a lucrative business.

Because of its rising popularity, its quality, and its efficiency in conveying audio and voice messages real time, VOIP vendors and IP phone companies are now proliferating to get hold of the growing market for VOIP.

You must be wondering, how do VOIP vendors and IP phone companies generate their income?

The business model for VOIP is very simple, almost similar to the regular interface or structure of regular online businesses.

An IP phone company offering VOIP services will have to acquire or make use of a VOIP billing software, which can readily be used by all major and minor businesses.

The VOIP billing software

A VOIP billing software is primarily used by an IP phone company in preparing VOIP bills and other business transaction processes.

VOIP billing software is very helpful in monitoring VOIP customers and their respective VOIP usage. Through using the software, VOIP vendors and IP phone companies save on efficiencies because the VOIP billing software automatically sends VOIP billing to end customers or clients.

Through this software, VOIP vendors and IP phone companies could very much maximize their efficiencies and significantly save on costs. VOIP bills are sent to clients electronically, making up for faster transactions, and payments can also be expected electronically through various means, like credit cards and online accounts.

Thus, VOIP businesses can save on labor costs and other traditional operational expenses. Acquisition of the VOIP billing software could indeed be a significant investment for VOIP vendors, but for sure it is much worth it.

In these times, where almost all businesses are in significant and dire pressure, it is about time companies embark on cost saving strategies. VOIP firms can save by using VOIP billing software, and those savings, logically, can be passed on to customers through further investments on service improvements and efficiency upgrades.

A calling card has made a significant place for itself in the telecom industry. It is initially started as a method to avoid using coins in the local pay phones. Today, any type of call i.e. local, STD and ISD can be made from the prepaid calling card. The card can be operated from any phone even if the outgoing calls are barred on that phone. The bill amount for all the calls made is taken from your prepaid card amount and the rate per minute for any call remains constant throughout the day.

There are certain points which must be checked before one purchases a prepaid calling card:
a) If the prepaid card is operational in the countries where one might travel. It must allow you to call back home from the foreign country.
b) The calls rates to make and receive calls, duration of validity period and the provision to recharge the call internationally must be checked.
c) To find out if there is any monthly fees for the card, the pulse rates for the call and if the call rate varies at different times of the day.
d) Find out the difference in call rates to different countries of the world.
e) Find out which other telecom companies the card provider has tie-ups with.
f) Find out whether the bill increment system is based on minute billing or minute rounding method. In minute billing, there is a 1 min. pulse and bill is taken for total duration of the call only. In minute rounding system, if there is a 3 min. pulse and the call duration is 4 min., then the bill is charged for 6 min.
g) Whether there is any charge for the calls that do not connect.
h) If there are any hidden costs and taxes within the calling card amount.
i) If the calling card customer service operator is available throughout the day.
j) If the calling card company provides any guarantee and is trustworthy or not.
k) How the prepaid calling card will be sent to you after purchase.

An international calling card is one that allows you to make calls to foreign countries at a price lower than normal ISD charges. The amount for each call to a foreign country is deducted from the prepaid card amount. The main point to be observed is whether the international calling card you are going to purchase can be used in the country of your frequent travel. You must also check the call charges from and to a country, both from your home country and the foreign country. Before traveling to a foreign country, it is a must to check the access code of the card with the retailer or Card Company.

Some More Tips

To avoid being billed any taxes on the card use, it is beneficial to purchase cards of smaller denomination and use up the entire amount in one call. You should not be billed extra amount for long calls if the call takes more than specific duration. If you use a card purchased from a company in one country, and use it to make calls from a payphone in a foreign country, a certain payphone fees is charged. It must be verified whether your calling card is exempted from this fees.

Some companies charge fees even at the time of disconnecting the calls, which is called the disconnection fees. These cards are better not purchased if you want to save money. The taxes levied on the call charges must also be checked. It is usually 5-15% of the call costs. Retailers usually do not mention about another type of fees called the maintenance fees, which is deducted weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. This is the fees the company charges for the maintenance of the card from the card-holders only.

Hence, you must verify all these features of different calling cards before you choose one that suits you best. It should be found out whether the card you purchase can be used in the countries you visit regularly. The card which you purchase should finally suit your needs and your way of lifestyle.

In the recent years, the internet has found new applications in day to day life. Recently, the method of transmitting voice signals through internet was initiated and this lead to the invention of VoIP phones. VoIP technology converts voice signals into chunks of data and sends them through the internet. These chunks reach their destination and are converted back into voice. VoIP phones offer more call clarity, greater bandwidth, faster file downloads and lesser operational costs than traditional phones. ANALOG AND VoIP: DIFFERENCES
The standard analog phones use Circuit Switching Network (CSN) where as the VoIP phones use Packet Switching Network (PSN).

The two differ in the way how data is transmitted.
• In Packet Switching Network it is done in the form of packets
• In circuit switching network the user is connected to the receiver by means of electric circuits

The method used in internet to transfer email is the packet switching method. The VoIP phones have a large number of benefits to offer due to which its popularity has been increasing these days.
• The VoIP phones offer better call clarity at cheaper prices and it is also easy to use
• VoIP phones offer more number of features at the same price as the traditional phones. These features include caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Call Block, Three-Way-Calling, Voice Mail, * 69 and more
• With VoIP, the service providers will let you keep your old phone number even if you change area
• Another advantage is that no matter what area you are in, you can choose area number of another area. Calls done to you by your relatives and friends in another place will then be local calls for them

WHY VoIP IS PREFERRED
Businessmen today prefer VoIP because VoIP offers high bandwidth and lets to transfer data quickly. Business transactions and deals are finalized these days mainly through internet and email.

Businesses need an application that:
• Is cost effective
• Is highly productive
• Is cheap when they contact their long distance clients

VoIP helps in meeting the data, video, and audio needs of the businessmen. All the call centers are also slowly but surely switching to VoIP technology.

VoIP helps them to expand their business by hiring employees from the overseas also. They can also integrate audio, video and web based features into one system. Hiring employees from different time zones helps to give full time assistance to the clients worldwide.

REQUIREMENTS FOR VoIP
For us to use a VoIP phone, a high speed internet connection is required. The VOIP Company gives you a VoIP Telephone Adapter with two Ethernet ports for connecting to the DSL modem and a computer. Your phone number is programmed into the VoIP adapter. This adapter converts voice signals into packets of data and send them over the internet. VoIP phones are cheap and take only the cost of keeping the broadband connection alive. However, the quality of sound is affected by the traffic on the internet line. If the modem fails or power shut downs, the VoIP phone stops working. Another problem with VoIP phones during disconnection is that the 911 or emergency services are de-activated. Even the emergency calls are handled like normal calls and you are sometimes kept in call waiting.

Hence VoIP phones and traditional phones have their own advantages and disadvantages. The consumer must assess his needs and decide which type of connection he requires.

Voice over Internet Protocol also known as VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet Telephony and Broadband Phone, is revolutionising the way in which we make long distance phone calls. VoIP has made it possible to provide a method of communication very similar to the standard telephone network, using an Internet connection.

The increases in Internet bandwidth, when combined with the advances of audio compression and machine speed has allowed VoIP services to be capable of a high quality, sometimes even better than the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). However, many users are also likely to accept a drop in quality for the benefit of free long distance calls that using VoIP gives you. This being the case, an even wider range of people are able and likely to use these systems. It is not surprising therefore that VoIP is increasingly being used today.

With VoIP, there’s not just one way to make a call. There are actually three:

Analogue Telephone Adapter (ATA) - With VoIP, you are able to use your existing telephone handsets, eliminating the cost of having to purchase any additional hardware. Currently, the most commonly used VoIP method is using an ATA which simply connects to your regular telephone and to your Internet connection. The ATA is an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) which takes the analogue signal (your voice) from your regular phone and converts it into digital data ready to be transmitted over the Internet. An ATA can either be purchased or provided free when you sign up with a VoIP Service Provider. Utilising an ATA is very basic, simply plug the cable from your phone into the ATA instead of the wall socket, and you’re set.

IP Phones- IP Phones look just like standard telephones. They have a handset, buttons and a cradle. IP phones use an RJ-45 Ethernet connector instead of the standard RJ-11 phone connector. They already contain the relevant circuitry to convert your voice into digital data. An IP phone is more convenient for taking advantage of many of the extra features that are included free with your VoIP account - call display, call waiting, call forwarding, voicemail plus many other others. Wi-Fi IP phones are also now available allowing you to make VoIP calls from any Wi-Fi point. An additional benefit that makes VoIP so attractive for home and small business users is flexibility. With VoIP, you can make a call anywhere there is broadband connection. Incoming VoIP calls can be automatically re-directed to your VoIP phone regardless of the location, as long as it is connected to the Internet. For business travellers, this means they can take their phone or ATA with them on their travels, and never miss a home phone call.

Computer-to-Computer - Also known as SoftPhones, this is the most traditional and possibly the easiest way to use VoIP. With this method you can make free Internet phone calls worldwide. All that is required is a PC connected to a broadband internet connection, and a headset consisting of earphones and microphone connected to the soundcard of your computer. You will also need to download and install VoIP software. With the software installed, invite all your friends to download the same software and when someone is up and running, give them a call! VoIP software is free to download, and allows you to make completely free VoIP calls to other users of the same software, regardless of distance.

Instant messenger programs based on VoIP such as Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, and Gizmo Project also have the ability to be mobile, enabling you to receive and make phone calls using VoIP technology.

VoIP Telephony is the process of routing voice conversations over an Internet Protocol network, rather than through traditional circuit-switched telephone lines. The voice information is converted into digital data packets and then transmitted over an IP network, such as the internet, or a local area network.

The main advantage of VoIP is the fact that it is highly efficient, and thus very affordable. The cost of transferring digital information over an IP telephony network is significantly less than that of transferring analog information over a traditional telephone line. Because of this, VoIP users can make long distance and international calls to anywhere in the world, at any time of day, for a fraction of what an ordinary phone company would charge.

Although call quality was originally a problem for VoIP customers, this issue has improved greatly with today’s progressing technology. Because of the fact that VoIP traffic goes over a broadband line, there is enough bandwidth available to allow for very good sound quality.

As anyone familiar with telecommunications would probably tell you, VoIP Telephony (Voice over Internet Protocol) is revolutionizing the way that people around the world make phone calls. More and more people are seeing the benefits of VoIP, and the number of users worldwide is growing at an astounding pace.

If you have a broadband internet connection, and a touch tone telephone, you are fully equipped to set up your very own broadband phone system, and start making use of VoIP Telephony to save money on all your long distance phone calls.

Internet technology is constantly introducing new and better ways to communicate with others around the world, and making telephone calls using VoIP technology is one of those advancements. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, and it allows a computer user who is connected to the internet through a high-speed terminal to make telephone calls to another computer or telephone without using a standard telephone company.

Essentially, there are two kinds of VoIP applications to consider, either hardware or software based. If you choose the software solution, you’ll have to have your computer urned on in order to both make and receive telephone calls, but the only equipment you’ll need is a microphone and speakers connected to your computer.

If you choose the hardware solution instead, you’ll be using a converter box called an ATA that will be attached to your high-speed internet connection. Your telephone can then be plugged into the ATA. The converter box takes the analog signal from your phone and converts it to a digital signal to be sent over the internet in data packets, which are then reassembled on the other end of the telephone connection. By using a hardware VoIP solution, you computer does not have to be on in order for you to make and receive telephone calls, although your Internet connection will have to be active. Many VoIP service providers are including the ATA at very low cost or even for free in some cases.

In order to make use of VoIP technology for placing internet telephone calls, you will need to subscribe to a service plan provided by one of the major VoIP companies in business today. The service plans are usually very inexpensive, often providing for unlimited long-distance telephone calling for as little as $25 per month. You can even save more by choosing a calling plan that places a limit on the amount of minutes used each month, bringing your total cost down to as low as $15 a month.

In addition to domestic long-distance phone calling, many VoIP providers also allow you to make international telephone calls to persons outside of their subscriber base for a per minute fee, sometimes as low as $.10 to $.15 per minute. Some providers even allow free long-distance telephone calling as long as it is carried out between individuals in their own subscriber base.

If you choose to use a hardware VoIP solution, you can expect to spend some time on the phone with customer support in order to get your system up and running correctly, but most likely you’ll be able to experience uninterrupted service from that point on. Also you can expect voice quality to be excellent in most cases, often rivaling that of land line telephones.

When you consider all the advantages of using VoIP technology to place telephone calls over the internet, it’s no wonder that so many consumers are turning to VoIP for their long-distance telephone calling needs.
